Livery Stable

The Livery Stable is a charming historic building located at 215 Main Street in Port Stanley, Ontario. Its classic 19th-century brick façade features large multi-paned windows and a solid rectangular form. Ivy often climbs up its walls, enhancing its timeless presence in the town’s heritage district.

Built in the 1870s, the building originally served as a livery stable, a boarding and care facility for horses and carriages used by travelers and villagers. Heritage records confirm the address in Port Stanley’s heritage by-law, emphasizing its historical role in transportation and commerce.

Over the years, the building has adapted to many new roles including a confectionery, a retail store, and even the village hall. These varied uses highlight the building’s importance in the evolving life of Port Stanley.

Today, The Livery Stable houses a retail shop or gallery (depending on current tenancy) and is open to the public during regular business hours. Visitors can freely enter to browse or simply admire the architecture from outside. The building continues to serve as a prominent feature on the Main Street heritage walking tour.

Smoking is not allowed inside the building under Ontario’s public health regulations. Visitors who wish to smoke should do so well away from entrances, in designated outdoor areas.
